"It’s how you play the game.”

Remembering when I was young and life itself seemed, well open to ideas, we played games. Those games were played again and again as we learned how to play the game. I still remember my dad and many others repeat the words “it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.” For years I carried that saying with me. I never understood exactly its meaning for its meaning has the ability to be applied to our daily life as well as to life itself. Here in as few words as I can I would like to address the issue of voter registration and elections with the words so often spoken to me many years ago: “it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.”

We have elections both too often and not often enough, but we are not willing to let everyone join us in this process of governing by voting. Aside from the prejudices we hold against a few or even against the many, let us just say that all people of voting age ought to be registered to vote. This is how we play the game: Everyone votes and the people with the majority of votes get to govern until the next election. It is very simple to believe and very simple to say and yet we are unable to practice this in our elections.
